January 9, 2012 - The U.S. has more time to appeal the World Trade Orgainzation's (WTO) recent ruling against country-of-origin labelling (COOL).
On Nov. 18, the WTO ruled in favour of Canada and Mexico stating that the U.S. COOL measure is inconsistent with its WTO trade obligations. Canada and Mexico first filed complaints to the WTO's Dispute Settlement Body in 2008.
A 60-day appeal period was to end on Jan. 18, but has been extended to March 23, according to a WTO release late last week.
According to the WTO, the extension came at the request of the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The three parties said that these requests were made to take into account the current workload of the Appellate Body, the release said.
