February 3, 2012 - A strike involving 800 unionized workers at a Cargill Meat Solutions in Guelph appears to have averted, according to local media reports.
Members of the United Food and Commercial Workers, Local 175 were set to strike Friday at midnight following a vote last weekend to turn down an offer from the company. However, after a mediation process Thursday an agreement has been reached that the union's bargaining committee is unanimously endorsing, an official told the Guelph Mercury.
Workers will vote on the agreement Sunday.
Cargill is a privately held company that employs 142,000 people in 66 countries. The company, which has its Canadian headquarters in Winnipeg, employs 10,000 people across Canada.
Under the name Cargill Meat Solutions, the company operates two beef processing facilities in Canada - in High River, Alta. and Guelph, Ont. The Guelph facility, formerly known as Better Beef, processes 1,800 to 2,000 animals daily.
