Government announces new market access for live cattle to the United Arab Emirates

December 20, 2011 - For the first time since 2003, Canadian producers can export live cattle to a market worth up to $40 million, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada announced today.

"This announcement instantly provides new export opportunities for Canadian producers, and is a significant step toward regaining access to other key markets in the region," Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz said in a release. "Our government's top priority remains the economy, and this new market access is good news for our hard working farmers across the country."

Today's announcement is symbolic of Canada's efforts to regain access to the entire GCC, which represents the fifth largest export destination for Canadian agri-food products. Canadian agri-food exports to the GCC surpassed $835 million in 2010.

The UAE is part of a regional trading block called the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The GCC is a priority market under Canada's Global Commerce Strategy.

"We are pleased to have regained access to the UAE market," added Rick McRonald, executive director of the Canadian Livestock Genetics Association. "This is good news for exporters who have been waiting to pursue this opportunity."
